St. Damasus Retablo Patron of Archaeologists
Damasus was 60 years old when he became Pope. Another group elected a different Pope. Because of this, Damasus struggled with his opponents, sometimes violently. He commissioned St. Jerome to translate the scriptures into Latin, the version of the Bible known as the Vulgate. He was responsible for changing the liturgical language of the church from Greek to Latin and was also a writer of epigrams. He encouraged devotion to the early martyrs and had the catacombs excavated for this reason. The Feast Day is December 11th.
"Holy St. Damascus, may my work be successful, illuminating, and help to preserve a valuable part of man's footprint on this Earth."
