San Mateo Retablo Patron Saint of Accountants, Bookkeepers, Stockbrokers and Tax Collectors
Matthew (Mateo) was a Jewish tax collector for the Romans. He was hated by his own people because of this. Christ, however asked Matthew if he could dine with him to the horror of his disciples. Matthew was indeed honored by this act of Jesus' willingness to dine with people of such ill repute. He was so deeply and spiritually moved by his dinner with Christ that he became a disciple and wrote the Gospel according to Matthew.
"Holy St. Matthew, man of numbers, writers of the Gospels, watch over me as I carefully tend to the books of my clients."
